Philip Greg Lavin, was born July 17, 1956, in San Rafael, California. He attended high school in Sonoma, California.
Greg played a key role in the success of the Union Pacific Railroad through enabling uninterrupted movement of rail transportation by repairing and replacing steel bridges after derailments. He began his career with the UP as an assistant to a welder on a bridge repair crew that traveled throughout the Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas region. He worked his way up to the head welder in the crew, and then became the crew supervisor.
