To the Emily family—Sherry, Darlene, and all the grandkids—we are so lucky to have shared in Emily’s light. Standing here today, it’s hard not to think of Emily as a force of nature. You don’t live 92 years across the coastlines of New Jersey, the deserts of New Mexico, and the plains of Wyoming without gathering a lot of "weather" in your soul. But through it all, Emily remained the most grounded person I knew. I’ll always remember her with a book in her hand or Cody at her heels. There was something so inspiring about her—she wasn't just a "grandmother figure"; she was a woman who went back to Kean University for a psychology degree because she never stopped wanting to understand the world. She had this quiet, sharp intellect that she’d reveal while she was tending to her garden or talking about her latest travels. When she moved to Laramie in 2011 and joined Trinity Lutheran Church, she didn't just move into a house; she built a home. She brought that "East Coast salt" and mixed it with "Western grace." Whether she was talking about the beach or the mountains, she had a way of making you feel like exactly where you were standing was the best place to be. But the thing that sticks with me most—the thing that makes me smile even now—is knowing she is finally with her mother, Santos. We all knew that was the one piece of her heart she was always waiting to put back in place. Darlene and Sherry, thank you for sharing your mother with us. She was a gift to this community, a friend to the earth, and the best neighbor a dog like Cody could ever ask for. She’s at peace now, likely in a garden much better than any we have here.
