Margaret Hoy Dickman

Margaret Hoy Dickman, wife of US Ambassador Francois M. Dickman, died on May 12, 2021 in Vienna, Virginia at the age of 96.

Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1924 to Otis and Edna Fern Hoy, she was a member of one of the greatest generations in American history.  Raised in a family of modest means but strong work ethic, she was one of five children, all of whom graduated from the University of Wyoming.   While at the University she met her husband Francois, an Army veteran returned from the War in the Pacific.  They married in 1947 in Cheyenne and soon moved to Boston where her husband pursued advanced degrees at the Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

As a young couple they embraced Francois’ career as a Foreign Service Officer with duty stations that would take them all over the world.  While raising their two children and supporting her husband’s career, she became well known for her volunteer activities.  Her degree in Home Economics, specializing in nutrition, opened many doors abroad including teaching diet therapy to nurses in Lebanon and nutrition to the first women nurses in the Sudan.  Throughout Francois’ career, Margaret was his partner in advancing American diplomacy and goodwill.

Upon retirement in 1984, they returned to Wyoming where they were active in community affairs, including the Albany County Historical Society and helped in establishing the Wyoming Territorial Prison Museum and the Laramie Plains Museum.  In 2004, Margaret’s extensive volunteerism was recognized with the Laramie Boomerang and Lions Club Distinguished Community Service Award.

In 2015, her husband and partner of 67 years passed away. Margaret is survived by:  Christine Dickman Andrews and husband Raymond,  Paul T. Dickman and wife Catherine, of Vienna, Virginia, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Memorials may be made to the UW Dickman Library Endowment Fund or to the Laramie Plains Museum.

Private family services will be held.
