Hanna Groathouse

Long-time Laramie resident Hanna (Haun) Groathouse, 95, died Friday, June 7, 2024 at Hospice of Laramie.

Youngest of nine children, Hanna was born August 19, 1928 in Riverton, Wyoming to Jacob Haun Sr and Marie “Mary” Elizabeth (Rein) Haun. Hanna Haun was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Riverton.

Charles Otho Groathouse married Hanna February 15, 1946; Hanna Groathouse graduated from High School with her class that May.

The couple with their first two sons moved to Laramie in the early ’50s, and added their third son. Chuck began the construction company in 1954 by building a house that became the family’s home for most of Hanna’s life. As the business grew all through the 1960s Hanna became the company’s bookkeeper.

Hanna enjoyed nature especially on the Little Laramie River cabin and later on the Big Laramie River Ranch with strolls along the river often seeing wildlife (eagles, hawks, falcons, kingfishers, herons, songbirds, owls, deer, etc.) Those two settings provided ample opportunities: to hunt for artifacts (arrowheads, scrapers, etc.); to search for varieties of rocks (fossils, agates, quartz, petrified wood, etc.); and other times, just walk to see what could be discovered while enjoying the company of others.

Hanna and Chuck were life-long, enthusiastic supporters of Wyoming football and basketball. In her later years Hanna enjoyed listening to Cowgirls basketball and even visited with players who came to her apartment in Spring Wind. She never missed an opportunity to let visitors know that she had the same apartment that Kenny Sailors had before her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings: Amalia “Molly” (Haun) Mayland; Marie “Mary” (Haun) Fabricius; Jacob “Jake” Haun; Martha Louise (Haun) Smith; Henry Haun; George Haun; Edward “Ed” Haun; and Hilda (Haun) Groathouse.

She is survived by her sons: Danial Lynn “Dan” Groathouse (Raenne), Kenneth Edward “Kenny” Groathouse (Diane), and Jerry Lon “Lonny” Groathouse; her grandchildren: Matt Groathouse, Carrie Ngai (Jon); Gina Gunning (Jim), Kelli Peterson, Julee Groathouse; Carl Groathouse (Stephanie), John Groathouse (Nicole), and Alan Groathouse (Mollie); her great grandchildren: Maisie Ngai; Nick Gunning, Grier Gunning; Chloe Dernovich, Aiden Dernovich; Tera Peterson, Charley Peterson; Miles Groathouse; Landyn Groathouse, Parker Groathouse, and Collins Groathouse; her great-great grandchildren: Amelia Carly and Birdie Ballinger.

As Hanna and Charles received love from their parents and siblings; they gave love and extraordinary support to their children and grandchildren. Toward the end of her earthly life, Hanna lost her sight, her physical strength and much of her hearing; she retained faith, hope, love and memories.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22 at Zion Evangelical Church Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Hill officiating.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the American Cancer Society.

Over the years both in Riverton and then in Laramie, what a blessing to know Chuck and Hana at Zion, through the conversion of the old Phi Delt house into the Lutheran Student Center and then St. Andrews Chappell. Always a guiding light!! See you in heaven not to long from now Hana and Chuck. Thank you boys for sharing your parents with me!!! Bill Sedlacek, Dubois, WY
