William Dean Flock

William Dean Flock, 86, of Laramie, WY, passed away on Tuesday, Jan.24, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, WY.

Dean was born August 25th, 1936 in Garfield County, NE to Freida Louise and William Jennings Bryan Flock.  Alongside five siblings, he grew up on a farm outside Ericson, NE, milking cows and growing watermelon. Through 8th grade, he attended a one-room schoolhouse.

From 1951-1955, he attended Ord High School where he excelled at football, basketball, track and baseball. Dean was awarded a football and baseball scholarship to the University of NE where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. He met his wife, Phyllis Kay Christensen, in high school, and they were married in 1959.

Dean served two years in the U.S. Army ROTC in Fort Ord, CA from 1963-1965. He returned to the University of NE to earn a Master of Arts in Secondary Education. In 1970, he earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of NE. He moved with his family to Seattle, WA for a two-year internship in surgery residency at Harborview Medical Center and Swedish Medical Center. He finished his specialized residency in Urology at the University of Kentucky. In 1975, Dean & Phyllis moved the family to Laramie, WY.

Dr. Flock spent 46 years in private practice serving the people and communities of Laramie, Rawlins, Wheatland and Torrington. From house calls to hospital rooms, Dr. Flock cared deeply for his patients. He dedicated his life to providing high quality urological care to the people of southeast Wyoming. He loved his work, patients and colleagues very much. His greatest joy was being able to help patients heal and feel better.

Dean was a devout Christian. He enjoyed being outdoors and spent many days gardening, farming, fishing, hunting, horseback riding and rafting. He was an avid Huskers, Cowboys and Rockies fan with a thirst for a good glass of wine. Dean was committed to his physical fitness; played handball, lifted weights and always ran stairs.

So sorry for the passing of Dr. Flock. I worked at the hospital with him for years. Dr. Flock was always so kind and easy to work with making him a well respected physician. My husband had a procedure by Dr. Flock and before he went in he passed the room I was sitting in with John, holding his hand. Dr. Flock stopped at the door and very sincerely said “don’t ever let go”.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Flock’s passing. When I was just 10 years old, living in Baghdad, Iraq I acquired significant urinary tract scarring from schistosomyasis.
This blockage plagued me for years until Dr. Flock successfully performed a major, complicated surgery for me. His expertise was genuinely amazing.

I am so very sad to hear of Dr. Flock’s passing. He was the finest urology doctor I’ve ever known. He treated me from time to time, always with a smile and easy-going friendliness that made me comfortable during procedures. His motto was always concern for the patient. As a former Big Red fan, we had something in common and his charming sense of humor won the day every time! I will toast him with a glass of fine wine! My heart and a hug are with Phyliss during these days.

I am SOO very sorry to hear of Dr. Flock’s passing. He trested me many years for ongoing kidney stones and I’ll never forget the last time I was in the hospital under his care–my last day there he came in my room singing–( very loudly) Christmas carols. Mind it was September when he did this.
A class act through and through. Rest in peace Dr. Flock. You will be missed.

Jess & Dewey- I’m so sorry for this loss. Our Dads were in the hospital at the same time after Christmas-my Dad was having a Urology problem and I think everyone thought for a second “Hey! 🤔 maybe…..”. I know the empty feeling in your heart. Your Dad loved his life to the fullest. He will be missed. Take care.

Dearest Flock Family;

My condolences to all of you. Although I did not know Dr Flock for very long, he definitely left his print on my heart. In the short time I spent with him, he talked to me about the importance of not letting life get the best of you and make sure to take time with your family because life is to short and you don’t want to leave it having regrets or wishing you did more. That is something that will stick with me forever. I pray you all find comfort during this difficult time.
