Vivian Carroll Haines (Viv)

Vivian Carroll Haines (Viv) 87 yrs. old 1/8/36 – 5/21/23

Services at 10:00 a.m., July 14, 2023 at St Paul’s Newman Center in Laramie

Vivian Carroll Haines was born on January 8, 1936, in Ogden, Utah to Vernon J. Carroll, a third-generation American immigrant from Ireland, and to Mary E. Carroll, a first-generation American immigrant from Holland. Viv was predeceased by her parents and by her siblings: Marilyn Blaes and Richard Carroll.

Viv loved her family, her friends, golf, and a multitude of animals that Viv cared for during her life. Her family, friends, and animals loved her back, as did the hundreds of Laramie children she taught in first grade at Beitel School.

Vivian met the love of her life, E.J. “Woody” Haines, when they attended the University of Wyoming. She was the first of her family to attend UW and would be part of a legacy of eight UW graduates to date. Viv and Woody were married on June 25, 1957, Woody passed away in 2018. Viv was an observant Catholic and a parishioner at either St. Laurence O’Toole or St. Paul’s Newman Center for 69 years.

Viv is survived by her children and their spouses John W. Haines (Molly Kramer) of Portland, Oregon; Douglas P. Haines (Lisa Lott) of Athens, Georgia, Carroll Lyn Steinberg (Richard Steinberg) of Lone Tree, Colorado, and by four grandchildren, Emerson Steinberg (Hong Kong), Mitchell Steinberg (Denver, Colorado), Lauren Haines (Ann Arbor, Michigan), and John M. Haines (Athens, Georgia).

Will always remember her kindness when we crossed paths when I worked at the bank where Woody was President. So sorry for your loss.

I have so many wonderful memories of Woody and Viv. We had some fun golf adventures at Old Baldy and Garden of the Gods and Laramie Country Club (of years ago) with wonderful cocktail parties, New Years’ Eve’s and Wyoming athletic events. Wonderful people and I feel so lucky to have had them both in my life.

Vivian was our daughter teacher at Beital School, and I enjoyed seeing her on the golf course but never had the privilege of playing golf with her. She had such a great sense of humor.

I’m so blessed to have known Mrs Haines as she was my first grade teacher at Beitel Elementary. She was a wonderful teacher who helped develop my lifelong love reading! I will always be grateful to her for all she taught me. My condolences to her family.

John, Doug, and Carroll Lynn, condolences to you on the loss of your mom. I taught with your mother at Beitel Elementary School beginning in 1977—1978 until her retirement. I have so many memories of your mother. She was a terrific teacher, but an even more wonderful person. Every May Day, she would come skipping down the hall singing her May Day song. She was a character.

Doug, John, Carolyn and families,
I’m so sad to hear of Viv’s passing. She was such a fun person to be around, a wonderful teacher, and I’m sure the best mom around. My mom loved her and I’m sure they are having a drink in heaven, or a few! Thinking of you all! ❤️❤️❤️
