Virginia C. Sumpter, 89, of Laramie, died Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Hospice of Laramie. She was born January 8, 1932 in Arkansas to Fount and Hazel Henry.
She was a foster grandparent for 14 years and loved all of the kids.
She is preceded in death by her two husbands, Eugene Mears and Leon Sumpter; her parents; her children, Tammy Emry and Genie Mears.
She is survived by her 5 children; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous foster grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021 at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenhill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Virginia’s name to Feeding Laramie Valley/Foster Grandparents of the Wyoming Rockies at PO Box 536 Laramie, WY 82073.

I also, as you are filled with remorse at the passing of my mother, Virginia Sumpter. I am unable to attend the funeral due to medical problems. I join you in your sorrow.

‘Grandma’ Virginia was a bright star in our program. Since 2005, she was a dedicated Foster Grandparent to her many foster grandchildren. She was also the most fitting example of living a life a service and positively impacting the lives of all that had the honor of knowing her. When I grow up, I will aspire to have the courage and grace that Virginia had. Our hearts are broken and we will miss her terribly.

I was honored to know Virginia and am heartbroken upon her passing. She is missed already by all of us, and we will forever remember the joy and all of the laughs that came with her presence.
