Virgil Allen McCullough

Virgil Allen McCullough died Monday, June 5, 2023, at NorthBay Health Medical Center in Fairfield, CA at the age of 85 years old. Virgil was born November 23, 1937, in Elba, Nebraska to Albert Raymond and Lillian Marie McCullough. He spent the first 11 years of his life living on a farm in Elba, NE before moving to Laramie, Wyoming in 1948.  He graduated from Laramie Senior High School in 1957. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army, where he actively served for three years.  After active military duty, he served in the US Army Reserves for about two years. He lived in Laramie most of his life until recently when he moved in with his oldest daughter, Tamra, in December 2022. He married Charlotte Brisch on September 25, 1965, and enjoyed a wonderful life together until Charlotte passed away on May 27^th, 2006. He was a proud parent of two daughters, four grandchildren and a great grandson. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1992, where he was everyone’s favorite mail carrier. He and Charlotte were active members of the American Legion, Cowboy Joe Club, Moose Lodge, and the Elks Club. He and Charlotte were dedicated Wyoming Cowboy fans, and always tried to watch all the games.  When he wasn’t at a game in person, he loved watching sports on TV.

During retirement he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his friends at The American Legion and Cowboy Joe Club events.  Virgil enjoyed traveling with Charlotte until she passed.  They had many great adventures together that they both cherished very much.  Before traveling for sight-seeing and pure enjoyment, they also enjoyed traveling to many destinations for their daughters’ swimming meets. Virgil was active in the USAA Laramie Swim Club where he volunteered his time to help with timing and heating (long before computers did the work). One of his favorite things to do was the annual Laramie Swim Club Picnic in the Vedauwoo Recreation Area.  They camped overnight and woke up early to make breakfast for a bunch of hungry swimmers and their families.  He was a friend to everyone in town.  When his grandchildren came to visit, he would take them out to eat at his favorite Laramie restaurants, where he would know at least one person everywhere he went.  They thought he was so cool and would always comment with delight, “grandpa knows everyone!”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lillian McCullough; and wife, Charlotte.  He is survived by his two daughters, Tamra Jones and her husband, Brice of Rio Vista, California and Debbie Morgan and her husband, Chris of Spokane, Washington; a brother, Tom McCullough of Mesquite, Nevada; four grandchildren, Alec Jones, Devin Vasil and her husband, Everett, Caitlin Jones and Tavia Morgan; and a great grandson, Theodore Vasil.

Virgil leaves a lasting legacy, and his memory will be forever cherished by his family, friends and all the lives he touched.  He was a man of great integrity with a witty sense of humor, kindhearted and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2023 at the American Legion in Laramie. Memorial donations may be made in Virgil’s name to the American Legion Post 14, PO Box 2187 Laramie, WY 82073.
