Robert L. Bell, Jr.

Robert Lenoir Bell Jr., a brilliant chemist and dedicated public servant, passed away in Laramie, Wyoming. Born on February 19, 1965, to Robert Lenoir Bell Sr. and Karen Rojean Gaskell, Rob was a lifelong learner whose career spanned the heights of academia and national security.

A proud 1984 graduate of Laramie High School, Rob balanced his early studies with work at Albertsons before earning his BS in Chemistry from the University of Wyoming. His passion for science took him to the University of Utah, where he earned a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry, followed by post-doctoral research at Iowa State University.

Rob’s professional journey was marked by a shift from the laboratory to the digital front lines. After overseeing computer systems at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, his growing interest in cybersecurity led him to the Navy Reserves. This eventually blossomed into a distinguished career within the U.S. Intelligence Community, where he served as a commissioned officer in the Navy Officer Corps and worked at the Utah Data Center in Bluffdale. In 2017, demonstrating his characteristic devotion to family, Rob returned to Laramie to manage the family business following the passing of his father.

Beyond his professional accolades, Rob was a man of quiet kindness and a dry wit. In recent years, he found joy in the grease and gears of his father’s and uncle’s classic car collection, a restoration project that kept him close to his roots.

Rob was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bell Sr., and his uncle, John Bell. He is survived by his mother, Karen Payne; his brother, Richard Bell (Issaquah, WA); his sister, Rae Benson (Cibolo, TX); and several nieces and nephews who will forever cherish their uncle’s generous spirit.

Rojean, Richard and Rae Lyn,
I have so many wonderful memories spent with you and Robert. He was always a steadfast friend through out my childhood and high school. Though we allowed geography and time to pass I will always have Robbie and you close to my heart. Peace.

Rojean, Rich, Rae, and family, I’m so very sorry to hear of Rob’s passing. I remember spending many days at your home while growing up. Rae and I always enjoyed finding ways to annoy Rob and Rich, as little sisters and their friends always do. They were always really good sports about it. I hope that all of the fond memories you have of Rob will give you comfort during this time of sorrow. Thinking of you all and sending hugs and prayers to you all. Roberta (Gonzales) Johnson

My deepest and most sincere condolences to family and friends of my friend, Rob Bell. We shared many experiences, only some of which I’ll share. Rob was wicked smart and a straight arrow. Most of all, by any objective measure, he was good, kind, and funny man. I will miss him.

So sorry to hear of Robert’s passing. Indeed we had good times together growing up. Laramie can breed strong friendships and I count myself as lucky to shared this with Robert. Yes the charger had great memories with it as well. Possibly a free 12 pack or so from the warehouse. Great memories of a good friend.

With saddened heart my long time friend has departed. I have so many, many good memories of from high school, fraternity, college, road trips, mutual friends, girl friends, beverages and great food. He is and will always be part of my life, memories and even motivator to achieve greatness. I remember when he started out memorizing the dictionary starting with “a” English became a foreign language with words I had never heard of. Rob had many passions and dreams. His life and careers lead him to be the best and among the best. To Rojean, Rich and Rae his presence is missed leaving empty voids. Please know he will never be apart from your heart and mine. God’s grace, support and love, I know I will see my friend again.
