Murdick Abbott Matheson

Murdick Matheson was born May 19, 1940 in Laramie, to Roy and Evelyn Matheson, and died June 26, 2018 from complications of a stroke.

He attended and graduated from Laramie High School in 1958. He married Loretta Shaffer on April 19, 1959, in Wheatland. They had three children, Denise, Mark and Yvonne. Later, he was married to Lil Smith on November 12, 2017, in Laramie. He also graduated from WyoTech after completing a phone on upholstery.

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a laborer, sparking a lifelong passion for steam trains. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for the Bureau of Mines (later the Department of Energy) and ending his working career at the Forest Service.

He was the happiest in the mountains. He enjoyed jeeping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, riding dirt bikes and competing in a good tractor pull.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Ron.

He is survived by his wife Lil, and her family. His children and their spouses; Denise and Bruce of Laramie, Yvonne and David of Laramie, and Mark and Audrey of Belen, New Mexico. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Carissa and Mason of Evanston, Samantha and Beau of Powell, Matthew and Janelle of Sheridan, Blake and Kirsten of Leadville, Wyatt, Troy and Smiley of Belen. He has four great-grandchildren Aspen, Slade, Madison and Gavin. Along with his first wife Loretta, with whom he remained friends, and his nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice of Laramie or the Laramie Animal Shelter.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00a.m. Friday, June 29, 2018 at Montgomery – Stryker Funeral Home.

    So sorry for the loss of Murdick. He was a great friend and buddy. He helped me when I was down. He was crazy about making sure my chihuahua was there when we were working on my tractor. I loved talking to him about everything but mostly old farm tractors. I will miss him forever.

    I am sorry for your loss I had no idea that Murdickhe had passed until this am(July 4th.) I went to grade school at Harmony and we were in the same graduating class in high school .I still refer to the house on the corner of Harmony Lane and highway 230 as the Matheson place.
