Mary Jane Hakes, of Laramie, at the age of 86, died July 30, 2016, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Wyoming.  She was born to Mario and Mary Francis Zulian in Steamboat Springs, Colorado July 9, 1930.

Mary Jane studied at Western State University where she met her husband Samuel D. Hakes and soon thereafter married.  A child of the Depression and wife of a Korean War Veteran, Mary Jane settled in Laramie in 1952 and made a home for her family.

Mary Jane worked at the Laramie County Public Library as a Librarian, while her husband went to school at the University of Wyoming, eventually becoming a well-respected Professor, and eventually Dean of the College for 25 plus years.  Once divorced she returned to the career of her passion and was a well respected Librarian once again at the Laramie County Public Library

Her family was her first priority in life. Mary Jane loved people, gardening, making dolls and quilting and bridge.   She was an avid athlete skiing and hiking in her younger days.

Giving birth to 3 children, she is survived by her daughter Linda C. Hickerson, 63 of Evergreen, Colorado, son Samuel D. Hakes Jr, 60 and wife Becky Hakes 55, of Midland TX. and her granddaughter Brooke Josephine Hickerson, 26, of San Diego, CA.  She was an avid and active participant in her grandchildren’s up bring and life experiences, Brooke Josephine and Cody Patrick Hickerson(deceased)

Mary Jane encouragingly loved people, children, animals and was an active perfectionist when it came to her hobbies, crafts and careers. A member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, the United Methodist Church, National Library Association, University of Wyoming Faculty Wives, Mary Jane selfless in nature, actively served the community of Laramie as a Volunteer at the Ivinson Memorial Hospital and the National Republican Party throughout her life.

Mary Jane is also survived by her sisters Elsie June Watson 87, of Rancho Palos Verdes CA and Dorothy Lorraine Burghart 77, of Grand Junction, CO, brothers Ernest Eugene Zulian 82, and his wife Carol of Canyon City, CO. and Donald Dean Zulian 81, and his wife Beverly of Grand Junction CO.  Her Aunt Violet Camilletti 90, resides in Milner, CO.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Pete Phillips, officiating.

Contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to The COPD Foundation in Memory of Mary Jane Hakes.
