Lucy Suska

Lucy passed away peacefully in Cheyenne, WY on September 6, 2018.  Born Ludmilla Janovich, June 11, 1923 in Simferopol, Crimea, Russia.  The second daughter of Svetlana Losiva, Ludmilla attended school and was trying to further her education when war broke out and she was put into service making detonators in a munitions factory which was bombed by the Germans.  She was wounded and would carry the scars and injuries of that attack for the remainder of her life.  After recovering from those injuries, she along with her Mother and sister Vyra, were taken prisoner and transported to the concentration camp of Dachau outside of Munich, Germany and put into forced labor manufacturing components for radios.  During this time, she saw and met a strapping young Pole named Alexander who was also imprisoned and in forced labor.  Ludmilla vowed to her sister and a friend she would marry that man, and after being liberated by the US Army, on July 20, 1945 she made good on that vow and became Lucy Suska.  The couple lived in Munich, Alex joining the US Army, Lucy ironically working in the same factory where she was forced to work only a few months prior, only difference being she would be paid in money instead of scraps of food.  The couple had a son Uric (Luli) who developed spinal meningitis and died at the age of two.  After Alex finished his tour of duty, they were offered the opportunity to relocate back to Poland or find sponsorship to the United Stated. There were some problems getting the proper documents and permissions since Lucy was born in Russia, but eventually found sponsorship and boarded a ship arriving in New Orleans on Christmas day 1950.  Taking a bus to Laramie, Wy and then another bus to Walden, CO their new home arriving December 30, 1950 only knowing a few words of English and $13 in their pocket.  They worked on the three rivers ranch where Lucy would work as a cook.  Later after Alex found work at the Ozark Mahoning Mine, Lucy was a cook as well.  She would find employment at a Hunting and fishing resort called Lindland in the Pines near Gould, CO cleaning cabins and learning to run the business.  During this time a son Mike was borne.  Lucy would manage Lindland for the next 30 years as well as help on the Stelbar ranches where needed.  After retiring, she intended to take life easy for awhile however that was not her nature and Lucy would work as a Janitor for the North Park Elementary School for the next 10 years. Lucy made countless friends in her lifetime which she cherished and helped her cope with the loss of her beloved Alex in June of 1995. She enjoyed Knitting and sewing, gardening, and visiting with friends and taking care of her beloved pet Spookey.  She was preceded in death by her mother Svetlana, sister Vyra, son Euric and husband Alex. She is survived by her step sister Tamara Burke of London, England and her son Mike of Walden, CO.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with Father Michael Freihofer, celebrant. Burial will follow at Jackson County Cemetery.
