John H. Gosney

John GosneyJohn Harold Gosney, 84, passed away peacefully at his Laramie home on November 5, 2015.

Born in Buffalo, Wyoming, John lived in several places including Kaycee, Centennial, and Laramie.

John served with the 300th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A (Cowboy Cannoneers), graduated from the University of Wyoming, and was a highly successful petroleum geologist.  He trained as a commercial pilot, was a flight instructor for many years, and taught many students to fly.  He was a Captain for Eastern Airlines as well as an accomplished stunt pilot.  After retirement, John continued pursuing his geology interests and piloted for the University of Wyoming.

John was a member of several organizations, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Stunt Pilot Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, Antique Airplane Association, Retired Eastern Airlines Pilot Association, Wyoming Geological Society, 300th AFA Bn Association, and BPOE.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, enjoyed fishing, loved to ski, and had a keen nose for locating fossils and other geological specimens.  He was also a talented diviner and found water well sites using a forked willow branch.

John is survived by his children Howard Owens, Laura Dulcie, and Will Gosney; sister Mary Baker; and step-children Cory Truitt, Darold Jackson, Loretta Wilson, and Victoria Hedrick; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Marshall and father Harold Gosney.

John wished to be cremated and his ashes scattered by his friends and family near his cabin in Centennial, WY.  We will celebrate his life and scatter his ashes in July 2016.
